48-year-old Richard Walder D.N. died yesterday around 9.30am in Coll des Prat, next to Puig de Massanella in the municipality of Escorca in the middle of the Sierra de Tramuntana, shortly after taking off from Binissalem airdrome.

When the light plane took off, the conditions were perfect. However, when the victim was flying above the area of Massanella he ran into thick cloud which had formed below the summit of the mountain. It appears that this loss of visibility was the cause of the crash into the mountain.

A harsh impact against rocks, the light plane catapulted and caught fire after the brutal crash against the ground. The pilot is thought to have died instantly.

Firstly, air and land experts mobilised after reports of a fire, as did members of the Firemen Mountain Group from Mallorca, from their fire station in Inca. Their surprise was a tragic one- the burnt out wreckage and the body of the victim inside.

After his death was announced, several agents from the Guardia Civil mobilised a helicopter, given the site was of difficult access.
Experts from the Judicial Police, Criminality Laboratory, and the Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM in Spanish) of the Armed Institute arrived and opened the investigation.
A judge in Inca ordered the lifting of the cadaver.

The death of Richard Walder caused considerable upset where he had taken off – the airdrome in Binissalem. He was a regular flyer on the island of Mallorca and was living in Barcelona.
