The presumed author of the ISIS flag is currently held in isolation in the Palma prison, 40-year-old Karim Abdeselam Mohammed, known as ‘Marquitos’.
This individual is the first Jihadist leader to be judged in Spain for recruiting suicide terrorists, and was sent to Palma to complete his sentence, after being ordered to prison for 12 years by the National Court for belonging to a terrorist organisation.
He was arrested in Ceuta in 2013 for recruiting in Spain Islamic terrorists prepared to commit suicide attacks in Syria.
A terrorist prisoner, who is held under strict control and left in his cell for most of the day, a few walks around the patio and always under vigilance. His contact with the rest of the inmates is limited.
On October 11, according to the court, the Jihadist left the isolation wing to entered the patio accompanied by two other inmates. Before the civil servants arrived, according to security protocols, they realised an inspection of the patio without detecting anything.
The three inmates entered together, and after the said amount of time, returned to their respective cells. It was then when the offices spotted two paintings and one drawing on each side of the patio. Two phrases written in Arabic and drawing of the ISIS flag. – ‘There is no God like Allah’ and ‘Ishmael is the prophet of Allah’.

As a first grade prisoner, Karim Abdeselam is kept in almost complete isolation away from the inmates serving lower terms. Therefore, the population held captive in Palma, didn’t even know about the two inmates were followers of the Jihad, and were supposedly innocent of what had occurred in such a controlled space.
Following protocol, the prison offices serving the isolation module had to produce a complete report on the writing and where it was and to take photographic evidence. At the same time, the prison director corresponded with the court to inform on the graffiti.
Karim Abdeselam Mohammed is currently on of the most dangerous inmates in Palma prison, considered as a jihadist radical, given his behaviour before being taken into custody, recruiting future suicide terrorists to commit atrocities in Syria. He was detained with seven other jihadists, which comprised an international organisation with links to Turkey, Belgium, Morocco and Syria. The Police link the network he led ‘Marquitos’ with terrorist cells who operated in Syria and had a direct connection with Al Qaeda. In fact, he captured several young terrorists as part of this criminal network, most of them in Ceuta who committed suicide attacks. During his time in prison, excepting this event, he was unaware of the sentence handed down, and he had complained about the lack of hygiene in his cell.
