The supposed defrauder denied encouraging British tourists to invent fake illnesses, but she recognised that she captured clients also on Tenerife and Lanzarote.

This suspect was the first to declare before Instruction Court 1 in Inca, which started the process against the facts and was then taken over by Instruction Court 2 in Palma. Her appearance was on July 20, weeks after the Guardia Civil detained seven people on September 7 in the so-named operation Claims, among them the leader of the fraudsters Laura Cameron.

The suspect, defended by Javier Villalonga, admitted having worked several months for the British company UK Holiday Claims, despite not signing a contract with them.

This hunter for clients was paid 100 pounds per client passed only the lawyers office, although she alleged that she had not been paid anything for eight months. She added that she had ignored how many of the 40 tourists’ personal details were sent back to the UK each week which then opened legal action against the hotels. Her job was to inform the tourists of their rights after contracting any illness in a hotel.

The suspect facilitated incriminating data against the criminal activity, revealing their communications networks, SMS and emails, in the names of the fraudsters based in the UK with the data of the victims caught.

These frauds, according to the Guardia Civil, had been perpetrated in many tourism regions of Spain over the last three years, ascending to more than 60 million €

When the suspect declared in Inca, she was accompanied by the popular accusation Mallorca Hotels Federation, represented by Jaume Campaner.

One of the main hotel chains affected was Club Mac of Alcúdia, which managed the hotels Saturn, Mars and Jupiter. This chain assured during 2016 they had received 273 reclaims, from 797 supposedly affected amounting to 4.2 million €.

Later, other hotelier groups including Hotels Meliá – the largest Spanish hotel chain. The investigation is being developed by the Economic Crimes Group of the National Police, the Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil and the Tax Office.

According to the detectives, the Mallorca clan was led by businesswoman Laura Cameron, who had recruited more captures. In the UK companies launching the illegal claims and lawyers offices, some of the suspected have not yet been identified.
