The blue flags accredit compliance on certain standards such as the quality of water, environmental management, disabled access, toilet facilities and lifeguards.

For the first time this year a river beach has obtained a blue flag at A Calzada in Puente Calderas in Pontevedra. The regions to see the highest increase in the number of blue flags is Galicia with 8 more , Murcia 5 and at the other end of the scale the Baleares which has lost 11 flags, 7 ports and 4 beaches.

The Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Borrego, greeted the news which shows the healthiness of the sector and with more tourists expected and spending more money the increase for this year has been estimated at 3%.

With 577 flags in Spain the country is ahead of Turkey 436, Greece 395, France 379, and Portugal 299.
Regarding ports alone Spain comes in third place with 101, beaten by Germany with 106 and Holland with 112
