The PSOE has decided to abstain before Rajoy to avoid a third election

The federal committee of the party voted 139 votes in favour of the motion and 96 voted against which means the PSOE will abstain in the second round of voting where only a simple majority is needed. Two members failed to vote.

The motion was placed by PSOE Euro MP Elena Valenciano who counted on an overall majority, ‘There has been a respectful, hard, frank and intense debate in the nest of the federal committee.

PSOE manager, Javier Fernández, said he was thankful the committee had seen commonsense after previous disagreements after he advised ‘you must abstain; it is the mandate of the federal committee.

A second motion, presented by the Basque socialist Txarli Prieto, who wanted a no vote to continue, was not debated given it was a text which dated from December 2015.

Now the next question concerning discipline of vote is the PSOE in Cataluña (PSC) who have always maintained they will never vote for Rajoy. ‘What I hope is for the PSC to assume and accept the result of this vote. I will try to persuade them to be consistent’, observed Javier Fernández. ‘It corresponds to me to persuade them to fall inline with symphony mandated by the federal committee. I hope on my heart this can be solved, as it would be the best thing for the socialists’, he underlined.
‘Abstaining is not shameful; abstaining is not supporting’ he repeated.

The arguments of those in favour of abstention were ‘to respect the result of the general election’ ‘the result is sacred’ figured in the winning resolution, as reported by Susana Díaz. The document which was supported noted ‘nobody has the right to oblige the citizens to vote for a third time despite the fact on the two anterior occasions their expectations were not satisfied’.

The socialists have undertaken, once Rajoy is Prime Minister, ‘from the very first day we in the opposition will be constructive, and search for support to revise the anti-social polices of the PP’

Among the arguments for no, led by Ciudadanos, who argue the citizens ‘have voted for change’ and the PSOE should not be companion to the old Government which was the most insensitive and new-liberal which Spain has suffered since the return of democracy’. They should not ‘abstain or lose influence’ because sometime the PSOE will face a new election and they will have to be faithful ‘to the lifelong principals, with a project which is progressively left and recognisable by the citizens’.

The winners swallowed humble pie and gave a dose of realism in the case they had forced a third election the PSOE ‘would lose support and lack the capacity to be an affective opposition, with the inability to condition the Government directing resources to the most needy, who need a strong and influential socialism’.
