Autumn rural escapes to Spain’s best beauty spots

Walking through nature, smelling the wet earth or burning kindle; here are some suggestions where to disconnect for a day

Sep 30, 2016 - 12:57 PM
The changing colours of autumn create an atmosphere perfect for a short break, to forget the day to day, ease stress and pollution behind in the large cities. Charming villages with narrow streets on the doors to nature and hiking, Spain has so many such villages and hamlets for all tastes.

ElTiembloAvila.jpg
El Tiemlo Ávila

El Tiemblo, Ávila
This small hamlet in the province of Ávila sits in impressive surroundings. Only 80km from Madrid and 45 from the city of Ávila is has much to offer; the reservoir of Burguillo and the nature reserve of the Valley of Iruelas where you can find one of the most important colonies of the black vulture in Europe. The reservoir is amongst pine trees which give an extraordinary light, and at the waterside stone houses have been made for night time in the depths of nature.
The beauty of El Tiemblo is ever greater amongst the chestnut trees, a perfect place to see in autumn when the leaves are falling from the trees and the chestnuts attempt to get into the sunlight and the shade creates a fairytale forest. Plenty of walking routes here though cows, hermitages and chestnuts some approaching 500 years old.

Consuegra, Toledo
The village of Consuegra is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Spain. Its battlements are crowned by the precious castle of La Muela and 12 massive windmills in the surroundings, the landscape made famous by Don Quijote centuries ago. Consuegra is great for a weekend visit for historians and the lovers of good cuisine.

Altea, Alicante
With views over the Mediterranean lies Altea, completely different than the previous, ideal for lovers of the sea and the coast which captures autumn perfectly. The quietness of a marine village removes daily stress.
Walking along the beach, stroll around the narrow white streets, discover hidden corners and enjoy gastronomy full of fresh produce or from the sea. Altea is ideal to visit in the off-season when prices are below the summer highs and during the winter an overnight stay can be different as well as economical.

Torla Huesca

Toria, Huesca
Set in the Huesca Pyrenees, doorway to the entry to the Ordesa and Mount Perdido Nature Park we find the small hamlet of Toria. Its bell-tower makes a striking photo with the mountain ranges behind. A few kilometres away is the start of one of the most beautiful and well-known hiking routes known in the Pyrenees, to the Cola de Caballo with duration of three hours walking along tracks and spectacular waterfalls;
The Pyrenees are at their best in the autumn, falling leaves and the mixture of colours come together in the valleys of streams and spectacular water shoots. The only negative thing is the cold and rain typical of the Pyrenees.
