The emergency departments in Málaga hospitals treat every week more than one case of domestic violence, and at weekends the number increases. In total in 2015, in the hospitals in Málaga city attended to 266 cases of sexual abuse or domestic violence, with women victims of all ages and social classes. In the health centres in the Málaga – Guadalhorce valley health district the number was 330. A further 125 suspected cases who called 061 from across the province.
Unfortunately, it is not easy to detect domestic violence and more difficult to confirm it and the health workers are always on the lookout for new cases. In these sense, the Health Council has formed their professionals with the Andaluz plan for sanitary action against domestic violence, a protocol dating from last year and which serves as a tool to help health workers in the field and in emergencies. The intention is none other by to ensure the victim gets the very best treatment and comfort, and also to expose those invisible cases of domestic violence.
‘The main problem which emergency doctors find is often the injured victim is dishonest about her injuries, often claiming it was an accident’ noted the coordinator of the Social Work group at the health complexes of Clínico and Carlos Haya, Juan Antonio Torres speaking to La Opinión de Málaga. However, he recognised the health professionals have learnt the talltale signs shown by the victims.
Most common are frequent bruising, repeated abortions, an incessant demand for preservatives, insomnia and irritability, taking time off work, chronic pains and when there are repeated calls to emergencies.
Special attention is given in the cases of single mothers or women who have others dependent on them, being pregnant, immigrant or with a disabling illness and those at risk of social exclusion.
