A Spanish solider has died in an accident in Kosovo

It happened when an armoured personnel carrier came off the road and overturned, only hours before a UN fact-finding mission to the area
A Spanish solider has died in an accident in Kosovo, during a routine patrol in the Osojane Valley, in Istok. It happened on Tuesday afternoon, when an armoured personnel carrier, with four people on board, came off the road and turned over.

The solider has been named as 19 year old José Javier Colorado Ramírez, from Puertollano in Ciudad Real.

Another man who was injured in the accident is named as 22 year old Juan Carlos Correa Muñoz, from Leganés, in Madrid. He suffered a broken arm and abdominal bruising.

Both men belong to the Alcázar de Toledo 61st Infantry Regiment, part of the Guadarrama XII Brigade, and based in El Goloso, Madrid.

The Defence Ministry announced on Tuesday that a Spanish Air Force plane had been put on standby to fly to Kosovo when necessary.

It happened on the day when a United Nations Security Council delegation left New York for a fact-finding mission to Kosovo, on whether it should be granted status as a fully-fledged nation. It’s headed by the Belgian Ambassador to the UN, Johan Verbeke.

There are currently 550 Spanish soldiers deployed in Kosovo, who are under Italian command and are mainly assigned in the Istok area. They are amongst the 2,800 who serve on peace missions outside Spanish territory.

Colorado Ramírez is the 128th member of the Spanish Armed Forces to die while serving abroad in the past 20 years. Seven of those have been in Kosovo, and 82 in Afghanistan.
