The Court has until midnight on Thursday to decide if the Supreme Court decision banning 52% of the ANV candidate lists was within the bounds of the Spanish Constitution
The Constitutional Court has admitted an appeal by the ANV party, Acción Nacionalista Vasca, against a decision from the Supreme Court which declared 133 of their candidate lists for the elections which take place at the end of the month null and void.
The court must give its decision on the appeal by midnight on Thursday, when the electoral campaign officially starts.
The State Legal Service applied for 122 of the 256 lists to be declared null, while the Attorney General’s office applied for 110. The Supreme Court finally decided to remove the 133 in common between both applications.
The final number represents 52% of the candidates put forward by ANV, and is based on documentation seized from ETA members which is said to link ANV’s lists with candidates for the outlawed Batasuna party, seen as the political wing of the ETA terrorist organisation.
ANV, the Attorney General’s office, and the State Legal Service all have until 3pm on Thursday to present their arguments in the appeal.
