The 4th edition of the Oviedo Jazz Festival was about to get underway

Despite having top names from the world of Jazz, such as John Mayall, Bill Wyman, Javier Vargas, Ramsey Lewis, Donna Hightower, and Chano Domínguez, the 4th edition of the Oviedo Jazz Festival has been cancelled on the orders of the city Mayor.

The PP Mayor, Gabino de Lorenzo, has announced what he described as the ‘indefinite postponement’ of the festival. The reason – it’s too noisy. ‘We are going to be much tougher on noise in this mandate’ said the newly re-elected mayor, who said that there had been complaints.

The strange thing about the decision is that it’s not just the open-air events that have been cancelled, those programmed in the local Prince Felipe Auditorium will no longer take place.

Opposition parties in the City Hall, together with the festival promoter and the artists involved, have criticised the decision.

The Mayor has now cancelled all night-time events in the city, with the exception of the local San Mateo fiestas which, according to his statement reported in El Pais, ‘will always see municipal tolerance and understanding from the citizens’.

Oddly the program for the Jazz Festival remains on the City Hall website.
