It is being considered for inclusion on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage
The Spanish government is working together with the
Mediterranean Diet Foundation for the Mediterranean diet to be declared as an UNESCO
‘Intangible Cultural Heritage,’ for the benefits it brings to health and to quality of life.
The news came from
Elena Espinosa, Spain’s Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Foods, after a meeting of the Foundation’s board on Wednesday morning.
Two other ‘intangibles’ related to Spain already form part of the list: the
Patum festival in
Berga, Cataluña, a celebration which dates back to the Corpus Christi celebrations of the Middle Ages;
and the
Misterio de Elche – The Mystery Play of Elche, which UNESCO describes as a ‘sacred musical drama of the death, assumption and crowning of the Virgin.’ It’s been performed since the 15th century in the Basilica of Saint Mary with special permission from the Pope.
