Two swimmers drown trying to rescue a girl in trouble

The child was finally brought safely to shore by the currents on the Cala Capitán beach
Two swimmers drowned on Friday morning and another three people needed medical attention after they tried to rescue a child who had got into difficulties in the Cala Capitán, in Orihuela Costa, Alicante.

The dead are a 57 year old Spaniard who managed to swim back to the shore before collapsing, and a 39 year old Dutchman who was rescued at sea by a Red Cross launch.

The rescuers who needed medical attention came were a 35 year old Briton and another foreigner aged 34.

It happened at 1030 in the morning before the lifeguard service had started to patrol the beach. The red cross gives cover between 11am and 8pm.

The child was finally carried safely back to shore by the current where she was collected by her parents.

Another two people drowned on the Costa Blanca this Saturday, in separate incidents which took place in Benitatxell and Torrevieja. The two men were aged 22 and 79.

EFE reports that another man is in a serious condition in the Marina Alta district hospital in Denia, after a near-drowning on a beach in Benissa.
