Passengers described conditions in the port as 'inhuman' as a technical problem stopped the sailing
The EFE news agency has reported that some 400 people had to wait as long as 14 hours in Alicante port in order to board the ferry to Orán in Algeria.

The delay was caused by some form of technical breakdown on the ship El Djazair II. Finally another ship, the Fantasia, eventually left Alicante at midnight last night, fourteen hours late.

The ferry company offered a free supper to the travellers, but some of them described the conditions in the port as ‘inhuman’.

The red cross say they treated 34 people who were waiting in the port, mostly for sunstroke.

In my experience, 14 hours seems excessive for passengers to wait.

Were they kept informed of what was happening? Were they allowed to leave the port and return later? Were they provided with refreshments?

For the Red Cross to be involved in treating people, the conditions do seem incredibly tough for what should be a pleasant journey.
