A National Court judge impounded the latest edition of the satirical magazine for a cartoon which depicted the Prince and Princess of Asturias in a sexual scene
The National Court judge who impounded a magazine with a cartoon of the Prince and Princess of Asturias in a sexual position on its front cover has called the cartoon’s two authors to declare this Wednesday.
The cartoon alluded to the recent government measure to pay 2,500 € for every new birth or adoption, and a comment that the payment is the closest the Prince will get to earning a living.
They face charges of insulting the heir to the throne.
Judge Juan del Olmo gave the order against the satirical magazine ‘El Jueves’ at the request of the State Prosecutor’s Office, who however made it clear that there had been no complaint from the Palace.
The cartoonist Guillermo and the cartoon scriptwriter, Manel Font de Vila, will appear in Central Instruction Court No. 6 in the National Court, where they will be questioned by Enrique Molina, who is standing in for Miguel Ángel Carballo, the prosecutor whose complaint led to the withdrawal order and the closure of the El Jueves website. El Mundo says Carballo is currently on holiday.
The right to freedom of expression is protected under the Spanish Constitution. There is, however, the possibility of two years in prison or a heavy fine for insulting the royal family under Spanish law.
