The artists and author of the controversial caricature will now only face a possible fine

The Prosecutor in the royal cartoon case has decided to keep charges against the two authors of the caricature of the Royal Family, printed in last week’s edition of El Jueves.

Guillermo, the artist and Manel Fontevilla, who wrote the joke, however will only face a fine, the size of which will be established when, and if, the case comes to court.

Both are charged with slandering the Royal Family, and by doing so bringing down the prestige of the Royals.

Another charge of insulting the Prince has been dropped – that was the more serious one with a two year possible prison sentence.

Meanwhile someone else was the topic of congress yesterday – The PNV Senator, Iñaki Anasagasti, writing in his blog on the Internet, has described the Spanish Royal Family as ‘lazy and unpresentable’.

Commenting on the El Jueves case, the Basque Senator said that the ever greater numbers of the Royal Family were starting two months holiday. He compared then to the Church which he described as untouchable in Spain, and said the Socialist party would not touch the Royal Family, ‘even with a rose petal’.

He also criticised the King for launching a new yacht, the 14th to carry the name of his friend José Cusí. The Senator said that was the real scandal, not a cartoon.

Asked about his declarations on the patio of congress before setting off on their holidays, Deputies from all parties were in agreement that the Basque Nationalist Politician had overstepped the mark.
