The PSOE federal executive is expected to veto the proposal from the Navarra Socialists for a pact with Izquierda Unida and NaiBai
A meeting of the PSOE federal executive is today expected to veto the proposal from the Navarra Socialists, PSN, for a possible three-way pact for government of the region.

PSN has proposed a pact with the left-wing coalition, Izquierda Unida, and the regionalist party, NaiBai. It comes after talks with NaiBai broke down last month, and expectations that the most voted party in the regional election - the Navarra branch of the Partido Popular, UPN – would have to form a minority government.

There are reports this morning that a veto from PSOE leadership could cause resignations in the PSN party leadership.

PSOE’s secretary for organisation, José Blanco, who rejected the proposal out of hand when he first heard the news from PSN on Wednesday night, heads the meeting.

The Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, is unable to attend, owing to other diary commitments.

The composition of a possible coalition government is being suggested in the press this morning as two regional councillors for PSN in addition to the presidency, three to NaiBai, one to Izquierda Unida, and the remaining six to independents.

The President of the Navarra parliament, Elena Torres, has given a deadline of 18th August for consensus to choose Navarra’s new Regional President. New elections may have to be called should that not happen.
