smallerBy m.p - Aug 6, 2007 - 7:48 AMThe 400-strong unit will be deployed in emergency situations at home and abroad
The Prime Minister is reported to have confirmed to the leader of the Murcia Socialists,
Pedro Saura, that
Los Alcázares is to be the national base of a new Civil Guard rapid response unit, the
Grupo de Acción Exterior.
La Verdad newspaper reports that the unit will be comprised of 400 officers, whose mission will be to respond to emergency situations, both at home and abroad.
The choice of Los Alcázares is closely tied to its proximity to
Cartagena Port and the Spanish Air Force Academy airbase in
San Javier. The site chosen is near
Torre Pacheco, on the road to Los Alcázares.
Construction of the facilities together with housing for the officers and their families is expected to start next year.
