The villagers are angry at the Archbishopric's decision to transfer their priest out of the village
The eight villagers on hunger strike in Albuñol, east of Motril, say they will continue with their protest ‘indefinitely’ until the Archbishopric of Granada returns their priest to the village, or at least explains why the decision was taken.

The strikers have been only taking in liquids since they started their protest in the local church at midnight on Saturday.

A spokesman for the Archbishopric told EFE news agency yesterday that the priest, 27 year old Gabriel Castillo, was transferred out of Albuñol in line with normal practice, and according to the needs of the diocese. He had been in the village for two years and was much-loved for his work in social problems and with the immigrant population.

The villagers give discrepancies about his methods as the reason for the transfer.
