It's the first time there will be no coverage on TVE for 51 years
The Spanish state television and radio broadcaster TVE, is for the first time in its 51 year history not giving any coverage to the bullfighting season in Spain.

The decision has been taken despite traditionally good audience figures for the National Fiesta.

TVE started test broadcasting in 1948 and indeed it was a bullfight which was its very first programme. It has recently been reducing its coverage, and carried a dozen or so fights last year, but now it is a bullfighting-free zone, despite spectator loyalty which had brought the channel 24% reach.

A spokesman for the broadcaster said that RTVE had nothing against bullfights, and that the decision had been taken because of broadcast rights which are ‘not always available or within our reach’.

The spokesman also said they wanted to respect the broadcast hours of child protection to which they had signed up.

Ao menos uma boa noticia.ESpero que Portugal, que imita a Espanha em tudo, tb siga o mesmo caminho, pois é uma autentica vergonha nacional.

Good for tve the more people etc that ignore the bullfighting the more likley is that it will die (no pun intended) a natural death instead of everyone shouting about how cruel it is etc and doing nothing but moan and groan about it

It's cruel! I moan a lot about the Corrida because I believe it encourages brutality. Brutality to animals, pets, and there is a proven link between that and domestic violence.
The EU should shut it down, and then the Nacional Fiesta could be a Flamenco show!

at least!

but stopping the broadcast it's not enough, it should be completely ilegalised....

TVE, though they maintain they have "nothing against bullfights" must have some feeling that there is something unacceptable about them. Otherwise, why would they be concerned about children being able to view this sanguinary spectacle?
You are right, TVE, it is not suitable viewing - for anyone.

As a culture evolves, so should its pastimes. All cultures have dreadful and public condoned violence in their pasts - no one is exempt. Let us all put this behind us, and move forward. Kudos to TVE for taking this dreadful spectacle off the air.

It is a sad day for a great spectacle. During my trips to Spain I atttended and thoroughly enjoyed many bullfights and viewed many more on the TV. Hopefully the aficionados will come forward and TVE will reverse this terrible decision.

What you enjoyed was not a "fight". The TV does not show the bull's suffering before the event- it is kept in the dark for 2 days, weighed down, it's kidneys beaten, drugged, sexually interfered with (why is that so inevitable?), horns shaved down, vaseline smeared in it's eyes... how can anyone be an "aficionado" of that?

Well done TVE, this is a very enlightened decision, for whatever reason you made it. Welcome to the 21st century, where sadistically torturing to death, animals that have the same feelings as us, should be just a distant memory.
