Immigrant death on route to the Canary Islands

Meanwhle the Captain of an immigrant boat which arrived in Málaga has been sentenced to two years in prison

One person dead and three seriously hurt is the tally following the sinking of a patera small boat carrying immigrants off the Canary Islands on Sunday. Those injured are suffering from hyperthermia and dehydration.

Another 20 people were in the boat when it went down, rescued 80 miles SE of Fuerteventura by a fishing boat.
All the travellers were from the Sub-Sahara region.

Meanwhile a second boat with an unknown number of travellers on board has been spotted by the Spanish authorities 200 miles to the south of Gran Canaria.

In Málaga the 19 year old Moroccan Captain of a small boat carrying 21 immigrants, six of them children, has been sentenced to two years in prison charged with acting against the rights of foreigners in Spain.

Mohamed S. was also sentenced to another year on public health charges, as a packet of hashish was found on board and fined 3,500 €.

His boat was intercepted by the authorities in Chilches on the Eastern Costa del Sol in September 2006.
