• Three confirmed dead after building collapses in Santander city centre - Dec 9, 2007 - 6:11 PM
The house came down in the early hours of Friday due to building work for an adjacent hotel
The town planning department in La Vila Joiosa has confirmed that a house which collapsed in the town centre early on Friday morning, did so due to building work taking place for an adjacent hotel.
The Alicante newspaper, Información, reports that the house collapsed just an hour after its occupants were evacuated to safety after they were woken up a loud noise and spotted large cracks in the wall. Residents of other adjacent buildings were also evacuated and will not be allowed back home until their buildings are judged to be safe.
Planning councillor, Vicent Serra, said construction on the hotel has been halted and the construction company has asked for the accommodation bill – affecting some thirty people - to be sent onto them.
