The Archbishop of Granada decided to reopen the church to allow the funeral of a local woman to take place
The Archbishop of Granada, Francisco Javier Martínez, has temporarily lifted his decision on refusing to allow any type of service to take place in the village church in Albuñol, following the death of a local woman on Sunday. Her funeral was due to take place on Monday afternoon, held by a priest sent to the village specifically for the service.
The Archbishop closed the church following a hunger strike and other protests by the people of Albuñol at the decision to transfer their priest, Gabriel Castillo, to another village, Cenes de la Vega.
Described as an exception by the Granada Diocese, the funeral is the first service to take place in the village since 11th August.
The 20 minutos website reported on Monday that the Archbishop does not intend to give an audience to the villagers, as he was asked to do by the Andaluz Ombudsman, José Chamizo, who met with a delegation of the villagers last month.
The Archbishop has said the decision to transfer Castillo is irreversible.
