The poll is a boost for the ambitions of the Mayor of Madrid who has recently been publically criticised by party leaders
A new poll published in today’s
El Mundo newspaper from the Sigma Dos organisation, indicates that Partido Popular voters want the Mayor of Madrid,
Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, to join the party leader
Mariano Rajoy in the candidate lists for Congress.
Rodrigo Rato, who has abandoned his post as head of the
International Monetary Fund for ‘personal reasons’ is also well supported by the public. Rato gets 83% support while Ruiz-Gallardón gets nearly 70%. Both the men are those best valued in the party by voters.
Ruiz-Gallardón has repeatedly said he wants to be number two on the list with Rajoy, and that he can combine a seat in Congress with his post as Mayor of Madrid. His open ambition has been harshly and publicly criticised by several party big-wigs including
Eduardo Zaplana, Esperanza Aguirre and
Ángel Acebes. Indeed practically the only person to support the Mayor is party veteran and now Senator
Manuel Fraga.
The party now faces a debate about its candidate lists. Ruiz-Gallardón has called for the PP to move further to the centre if it wants election success, and today’s poll also indicates that 32% of those questioned think the PP in opposition has performed poorly.
