The British and Spanish Foreign Minsiters, David Milliband and Miguel Angel Moratinos held a meeting in Madrid on Friday
The Gibraltar Chief Minister, Peter Caruana, on Friday called a General Election for the rock on October 11. The colony’s parliament has now been dissolved.
The announcement came on the same day that Spain and the United Kingdom decided to postpone more talks on Gibraltar until the next three-way meetings are established. These three way meetings are now set to talk about practical matters such as maritime cooperation, recently highlighted by the New Flame which remains half sunk off Europa Point.
David Milliband was in Madrid to meet with the Spanish Foreign Minister, Miguel Angel Moratinos on Friday. At the press conference afterwards, Miguel Angel Moratinos had no problem in saying that Spain would start to negotiate on the question of sovereignty at ‘the opportune moment’.
Peter Caruana has won for the Social Democrat party the past three times and has taken Gibraltar on a closer path to Spain with joint use of the airport now a reality.
His rival at the poll will probably by Joe Bossano from the Socialist Labour Party who led the Government between 1988 and 1996.
