It will be the first exhibition in the new extension to the Prado Museum, and the first painting was hung in the gallery today
A canvas painted by Eduardo Rosales in Rome in 1864, ‘El testamento de Isabel la Católica’, has become the first painting to be hung in the new galleries in the extended Prado Museum in Madrid.

The picture and frame weighing 250 kilos was placed on the wall by a team of six today. The hanging was described by the Minister for Culture, César Antonio Molina, who was present, as ‘significant and symbolic’. Restorers at the Prado are putting the last touches to the frames of the other works which will make up the opening exhibition.

The new section of the museum opens on October 30 with an exhibition of the Spanish Masters from the 19th century. IT consists of 95 paintings and 12 sculptures, and continues until May 4 2008. Experts consider that the Spanish masters of the 19th century have not been given the space and visibility they deserve upto now.

The new extension at the Prado has taken 15 years to complete, and was finally finished last March.
