Rich Harris and Bill Jeffery will cover a distance of 200 kilometres in their fundraising walk for the Iberian Imperial Eagle
Two British men are walking the coasts of
Alicante and
Murcia to raise funds for the protection of the
Iberian Imperial Eagle.
Named by EFE as 51 year old
Rich Harris and
Bill Jeffery, aged 55, they will be walking a distance of 200 kilometres, in a fundraising event organised in conjunction with
SEO/Birdlife, the Spanish Ornithology Society.
Both men are members of the
Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in the UK, and chose the Imperial Eagle as the ‘icon’ of bird protection in Spain, and the Costa Blanca and Murcia for the large numbers of British residents and holidaymakers on this part of the Spanish coast.
An SEO spokesperson told EFE that, while this type of fundraising is much less usual in Spain than it is in the UK, they thought it was an excellent idea when the two men got in touch, and decided to support the initiative.
The funds raised will go towards the organisation’s conservation programme for this endangered species,
‘Rising up in Flight,’ which hopes to bring Imperial Eagle numbers up to levels considered as ‘safe’: from the current 200 pairs up to 500.
