My husband and I were in Almunecar on the day of the storm. Our car was
shunted down the road from the Majuelo Park across the road into another
car. We could not believe it when it actually started! We tried to back to
our apartment in Velilla Beach area. We could not believe the scenes; every
road was blocked and the motorway was at a standstill. We left the centre
of Almunecar at 4.15 to go to Velilla beach and arrived there at 7.15 pm!
We had to use sticks to test the water and mud to see how high it was,
everyone was loosing flip flops in the mud and water. The car park which
is used for the market was the worst hit, people were wading across it
waist deep in thick sticky mud, motor bikes and washing machine was
floating about.
I thought the authorities in Almunecar were wonderful and got things moving
as quickly as they could. The sight of the poor people with all their
possessions absolutely ruined by the water and mud, trying to dry them on
the pavement was very sad indeed. Even more sad, obviously was the poor
man that died.
I do hope that Almunecar can get rid of all the terrible damage and mud as
we love it so much there and we will be returning in the Spring.

The 44 year old man was in his garage when the flood water caused a retaining wall to collapse
The severe weather which affected Andalucía on Friday, with large hailstones affecting the Marbella and Coín area in particular, also caused considerable damage in the area of Nerja and Almuñecar.
The body of a 44 year old man German man has been found by divers in Almuñecar, after he was surprised by the flood when in his garage. He has been named with the initials S.B. Reports say he had driven his car out of the garage, but went back inside to get his moped which was underwater inside. It was at that time that a nearby retaining wall next to a river gave way, and a wave of water stuck the garage. Members of his family saw how be went back into the garage, but did not come out.
Firemen were called out 82 times in the town as the downpour hit.
In nearby La Herradura the retaining wall for the Jate river gave way under the pressure of water.
In Nerja 200 litres per square metre fell, car parks were flooded, and there is concern for the state of part of a coastal walkway and also for the older bridge which gives access to the town.
Nerja and nearby villages, some 40,000 people, were without power for some seven hours during the afternoon.
In Almería the city’s football stadium looked more like a swimming pool with water reported to be knee-deep over the pitch.
Back in the west of the region, the rain is reported to have ruined 15% of the grape harvest in the Jerez region.

My girlfriend and I were in Oasis de Capistrano (the eastern side of Nerja)
when the storm hit. It was the day we were supposed to leave for home.
Water was being blown through the cracks in the windows and I later heard that the plaster and ceilings have collapsed in the apartment we were staying in. We know the owner and are very sad that this has happened to his property, we are also very sad to learn of the terrible news that a person died in the storm.
My girlfriend did not realise the severity of the storm until I brought a hail stone the size of an ice cube into the apartment! A river ran by our apartment and this become increasingly swollen and the swimming pool and cafe area was underwater, at this point the thunder was constant and not like the thunder storms we have in the UK. A local gardener stated 'Never in my whole life have I seen the river like this'. At this point I realised that this was a very serious incident.
Following the powercut we decided to take our chances and leave for the airport in Malaga, despite the heavy rain; hail and storms we took the highest route we could and no more than 10km away the rain stopped and it was a rather sunny day. This was the most surreal part of day for us, to have gone from such havoc to relative calm.
We hope that Nerja and surrounding areas first recover from the flooding and regain some sense of normality. We would also urge the authorities to take the time to assess and learn from this and actively try to avoid such instances occuring in future as best they can.
We look forward to returning to Nerja in future and encourage others to visit this incredibly beautiful area of Spain now that the waters have receded.
