The weakening storm has now moved north to Cataluña
The heavy rains moved East over the weekend with Alicante Province being hit hard on Saturday.
Three roads were closed by landslides, and hundreds of cars were damaged in the storm as the province was hit by 119 litres of rain per square metre in places. The fire service was called out some 500 times. Train services were suspended on Friday night, but were re-established on Saturday morning.
However the Trenet light railway was derailed by the weather, and the new by pass under construction round Alicante was among the roads flooded. The Trenet came off the rails in Altea, but fortunately there were no injuries.
Several cars were damaged when the cornice of a building fall in El Campello from a height of 16 floors, fortunately without causing injury. An abandoned home collapsed in Mutxamel, and several basements and garages were flooded in Alicante City especially in the area near the beach. Residents of PAU5, el Golf and Míriam Blasco complained this was their second flood in seven years and have said they will demonstrate for something to be done.
