The Mercedes team Sports Director has insisted that both drivers get equal treatment

Few people now believe that Fernando Alonso and Mercedes McLaren will be able to keep to their contract and work together until the end of December 2009. The El Mundo newspaper reports that Alonso will be able to leave the McLaren Mercedes team if he wants to do so.

It comes following reports that McLaren are already hiding information about the new car for 2008 from him.

There are three races left in the World Championships, the first of them this Sunday in Japan. Alonso’s team mate, British rookie Lewis Hamilton, currently leads the world champion in the drivers race by two points. The distance between Alonso and his team boss, Ron Dennis, is far greater, with the two reported not to have spoken for weeks.

Norbert Haug, the Sports Director for Mercedes, has said that despite it all, he is convinced that Fernando Alonso has ‘an absolute equality of treatment’ with respect to Lewis Hamilton.

There are reports that both Ferrari and a return to Renault may open up as future possibilities for the driver from Asturias.
