Chiclana could decide to demolish the
El Castillo state school if it proves necessary to archaeological excavations taking place on the site, where artefacts going back to Phoenician times have been discovered, possibly evidence of the first Phoenician settlement on the Iberian peninsula.
Other finds on the site date from mediaeval times and from the Roman Empire in the 1st century AD.
Nicolás Aragón, councillor for public works at Chiclana Town Hall, told La Voz Digital newspaper that the decision to demolish would be taken in the long term in conjunction with the Junta de Andalucía’s education department.
Town Hall permission has in the meantime been granted to the team of archaeologists to continue their work over the school holidays.
All the finds from the site will be exhibited in the new municipal museum due to open its doors before the end of the year.
