Spanish satirical magazine puts King Juan Carlos on their cover again

It comes the day after the two main political parties in Spain called for 'maximum respect' for the monarch

The Spanish satirical magazine, ‘El Jueves’ which is published tomorrow Wednesday, once again has placed a royal cartoon on its cover.

The caricature this time is of the King himself with flames coming from his dead – ‘He’s very burnt out’, – says the caption, adding ‘Where’s the respect?’.

The cover is a clear allusion to the recent demonstrations in Girona where images of the King have been set on fire by independence protesters.

It’s the third time that the magazine has published a royal caricature on the cover, the first one featured the Prince and Princess of Asturias in a sexual pose, and resulted in a court order taking all copies off the street the following day. That order led to far more people finding out about the cartoon and saw widespread distribution on the Internet. There has also been a cover of the King dressed as a paparazzi photographer trying to take a photo of a nude Princess Letizia.

News of the new cover comes just a day after the Monarch spoke to defend the role of the monarchy in Oviedo yesterday, following attacks from many quarters and sections of the media over recent weeks.

Both the Partido Popular opposition and the Socialist Government have supported the words of King Juan Carlos, and called for ‘maximum respect’ for him.

Following the previous removal of the magazine from sale, there was a widespread debate in the media about Freedom of Speech of Spain.
