The El Mundo reporter, Julio Fuentes, died along with his colleagues from Italy, Australia and Afghanistan in November 2001
The man found guilty of killing El Mundo newspaper’s special envoy to Afghanistan in November 2001, Julio Fuentes, was amongst 15 prisoners to be executed in Afghanistan on Sunday night.
Reza Khan was sentenced to death in November 2004, after he was found guilty of killing Fuentes, the Italian journalist María Grazia Cutuli, the Australian cameraman Harry Burton, and the Afghan photographer Azizullah Haidari, who worked for Reuters, in an attack on the road between Jalalabad and Kabul.
Khan was also sentenced to 15 years for raping the Italian journalist before he killed her.
El Mundo reports that he told the court when the sentence was issued in 2004 that he took part in the assassination on the orders of a local military chief, who he said would have killed him if he refused to obey.
