It was used by the man known as El Chino, who led the cell which carried out the attacks, and who was amongst the seven terrorists who blew themselves up in Leganés two weeks later
More than three years after the massacre took place, police in Ceuta have found the car used by the leader of the cell which carried out the Madrid train bombings in March 2004, when 191 people lost their lives and hundreds were injured.
El Mundo newspaper said on Monday that the car was used by Jamal Ahmidan, ‘El Chino,’ who was one of the seven terrorists who blew themselves up in a Leganés flat on the outskirts of Madrid, where a police officer also died. The suicide bombing was a little over two weeks after the massacre in the Spanish capital.
The car was found in the El Príncipe district of Ceuta, and its location was reported by a lawyer representing one of the accused in the 11-M case.
El Chino was driving the vehicle when he was pulled over on the A-1 motorway on 5th December 2003.
Officers discovered three kitchen knives, a wooden mallet, and a large number of 50 € notes together with other items. He was reportedly carrying false documentation but was not taken into custody.
El Mundo reports news from the Cuatro television station that the BMW vehicle was bought second hand by El Chino’s brother in Germany in May 2003.
He sold it on to Abdelilah el Fadoual, who’s also accused in the case, in January 2004. El Fadoual told the court during the trial that the car was in Ceuta.
The car will now be analysed by police for any evidence.
