The Spanish National Court will give sentencing on 31st October
The Spanish National Court has confirmed that sentencing in the 11-M case – the Madrid train bombings - will be announced on 31st October, more than 3 and a half years after the terrorist attacks on the local train network killed 191 people and injured another 1,841.
The sentences for all 27 accused will be given in a public reading at 11 o’clock that morning, in the presence of the suspects, their lawyers and the 23 private accusations in the case.
It takes place in the National Court pavilion in the Casa de Campo in Madrid, where the original 29 accused were tried. The trial concluded on 2nd July this year.
Most of those considered to have direct responsibility for the attacks died in a suicide bombing in a Leganés flat, on the outskirts of Madrid, a little over two weeks after the train bombings, where seven suspected terrorists and a National Policeman lost their lives.
One of the terrorists who died was the leader of the cell, Jamal Ahmidan, otherwise known as ‘El Chino,’ whose car was discovered in Ceuta just this week.
Only two of those considered directly responsible came to trial: Jamal Zougam and Abdelmajid Bouchar, while another two of the main people on the list of accused are Rabei Osman el Sayed, known as ‘Mohamed the Egyptian’ - and currently serving 10 years in prison in Italy - and Hassan el Haski. They are both thought to have had the idea of carrying out the bombings.
El País gives some information on the sentences the prosecution has asked for all the accused: 38,952 years for the crime of belonging to a terrorist organisation, for 191 counts of murder, 1,841 of attempted murder and for 4 counts of the crime of destruction.
