There was a separate incident off El Hierro, where authorities are searching for sacks of a highly pesticide spotted off shore
Authorities on Gran Canaria have been working to clear a 300 metre fuel slick which appeared off the coast of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, stretching from Bocabarranco to Las Gaviotas. It came from a crack in the fuel pipeline to the Unelco electricity plant, with reports from witnesses early on Sunday of small explosions in the area where the slick appeared.

Elsewhere on the islands, 120 sacks of a highly toxic pesticide were spotted off the coast of El Hierro on Saturday afternoon, close to the island’s Parador. It is said to be a chemical known as Fertox, and is believed to have come from a passing ship.
The search for the sacks restarted at daylight on Sunday.
