The arrest was made after he tried to stop the Spanish authorities from searching the vessel.

The Capitan of the Odyssey Explorer has now been arrested for resisting the judicial search of his vessel. He was charged with resisting authority by trying to stop the search, according to a Civil Guard source.

The company notes that they had invited the Spanish authorities to inspect the boat when she was docked in Gibraltar, but they refused the invinvitation.

The Odyssey Explorer was escorted into Algeciras port yesterday and the order to search the vessel comes from a court in La Linea. It’s alleged to be one of the boats used to recover Spanish coinage from a site, the location of which is still to be confirmed by the company. The vessel carrying the coins has only been named with the code name ‘Cisne Negro – Black Swan’.

Odyssey continues to insist that the find was made in international waters, away from Spanish jurisdiction.

The Andalucian Councillor for Culture, Rosa Torres, has commented that the action of the Guardia Civil in seizing the Odyssey Explorer was sound.

The boat will now be searched, although there have been reports in a Spanish newspaper, La Razón, that the Odyssey company has already removed items of value when docked in Gibraltar, and put a new crew on board.
