A team from the Spanish Guardia Civil are travelling to Argentina on Friday to question the Spaniard of Uruguayan origin

A Spaniard of Uruguayan origin has been arrested in Buenos Aires, in connection with the theft of ancient maps from the Spanish National Library last August 24. Three days after the robbery was announced, Rosa Regás, resigned as the Director of the National Library.

60 year old César Gómez Rivero has apparently handed himself into the authorities, and a team from the Spanish Civil Guard are reports by some sources to be preparing to travel to Argentina on Friday. He was also carrying other documents which he claimed had also been taken from the Biblioteca Nacional.

He had been identified as the alleged thief by the Civil Guard on the 5th of this month.

However despite the reports coming from Argentina, the Civil Guard in Spain are saying that the thief has not in fact been caught.

Another one of the mapamundi taken from Madrid was earlier recovered in Australia, but it still has not been authenticated.
