The Deputy Prime Minister has been visiting the towns most affected by the massive downpour, as heavy rain continues in the region

The Cabinet meeting on Friday is to approve an urgent Act with a series of 15 measures to help the 70 towns affected by the devastating floods which hit the Alicante and Valencia areas last Friday.

The news came from the Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega on a visit to Beniarbeig, Alicante province, on Thursday, on her tour of towns affected by the floods.

She said she could give no details yet on how much aid would be made available, but did say that she would work to ensure that it arrives as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

The Deputy Prime Minister began her tour in Calpe on Wednesday evening where, early on Thursday, a campsite was evacuated after a nearby watercourse burst its banks after more heavy rain on Wednesday night.

The rainfall closed three roads in Valencia province on Thursday, and also led the Maritime Authority to close the Port in Gandia, with a forecast of increasingly bad weather.

There was heavy rain throughout Thursday, with 97 litres per square metre registered in Beniarrés, in the north of Alicante province.
