RENFE Spanish Railways fleet 220 coaches to cover the problems caused by landslides resulting from the AVE high speed line construction

The infrastructure problems for commuters in Barcelona are worse than ever this morning. There were serious problems over the summer as construction work for the AVE high speed train line connection to Madrid continued, and the same construction has led to the new problems.

Land has subsided in five different places, including a main tunnel, resulting in the closure of three local train lines, affecting an estimated 160,000 travellers.

RENFE Spanish railways says that a fleet of 220 coaches are to be used in an alternative transport plan they have established to try and keep people moving. However there are fears that will just add to the traffic chaos on the roads. Even the most optimistic say the problems will not be solved for at least a week.

The RENFE information line is 902 11 55.

Meanwhile following the continued problems, left wingers IU have called for the construction work for the AVE line to be halted and an enquiry launched. They allege that corners are being cut as the constructor tries to meet the target date of December 21, when the Government says the Barcelona service will open to the public.
