The Monarch was opening a news agency congress in the town

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia were in Estepona yesterday to open the Second World News Agencies Congress in the town.
Thousands of local people turned out to see them, despite the heavy rain.

In his Speech, King Juan Carlos spoke of the link between the freedom of the press and democracy.

‘Never has the relationship between freedom of the press and democracy been as close as it is now’, he said.

Manuel Chaves, the President of the Junta de Andalucía was also present and spoke of the role of the King in the change to democracy in Spain. He attacked those who had recently been attacking the Monarch in the media.
