Cervical cancer vaccine now available in Spanish pharmacies

Currently on sale at more than 450 €, Gardasil will be made available free of charge as part of the vaccine calendar list from 1st January

The new vaccine, ‘Gardasil,’ against cervical cancer and the VPH virus is now on sale in pharmacies across Spain, with, as El Mundo newspaper reports, the first to receive it a 24 year old student who received the first of her three doses at the San José USP Hospital in Madrid on Thursday.

The three doses are sold at a total price of 464.58 €. Gardasil will, however, be included in the vaccine calendar list in the National Health Service from 1st January next year, and will be brought in progressively by the regional health services in Spain’s autonomous communities. There are original plans to make the vaccine free of charge for girls aged between 11 and 14, with hopes that it could be extended up until the age of 26.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women and currently leads to more than 700 deaths a year in Spain.
