Spain's Prime Minsiter promised 0.7% of the GDP would be spent on aid if he wins next year's election
Spain’s Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has promised to spend 0.7% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product on development if he wins the elections in March next year.
In fact the target amount set for 2012 is not a new promise from the Prime Minister. The plan to progressively increase development aid to that level was part of the Socialist Manifesto in 2004.
It would mean that Spain will become the first of the top ten industrialised countries to dedicate such an amount.
It comes after the Socialist Government has this year assigned four billion € to cooperation, double the amount seen in 2004.
The cabinet has approved a series of measures to help development...
210 new workers are to be taken on by the Spanish International Cooperation Agency AECI, 150 of them in Spain and 60 abroad.
A new humanitarian aid office is planned which would coordinate different aid areas and have a budget of 100 million €, paying special attention to the problems of the African Sub-Sahara and Latin America.
Queen Sofia presided over the opening of a meeting of the Spanish Cooperation for Development group in Madrid on Thursday.
Secretary of State for Cooperation, Leire Pajín, said it was the political will of Spain to eradicate poverty, but that this need finance and intelligence, without forgetting the ‘social and citizens’ implication’.
