The rallies in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia come after the case of the agression against an Ecuadorian girl on a Barcelona train
Hundreds of people marched in Spain on Saturday against racialism and xenophobia in the country. Large demonstrations were held in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia to denounce the racist and xenophobic aggressions, such as the one seen last October 7 on a Barcelona train, when a young Ecuadorian girl was insulted and kicked by a 21 year old skinhead, the aggression being caught on the train’s closed circuit TV.

The court documents now show that the victim was called ‘Zorra inmigrante de mierda’ – Shitty immigrant slut.

Despite the harshness of that attack, the 21 year old aggressor, Sergi Xavier Martín Martínez, has been released without bail.

Behind the slogan ‘Everyone against racism’, hundreds of people from different ethnic groups gathered in the Puerta del Sol in the centre of Madrid, called by political parties, unions and dozens of human rights organisations. A statement was issued in solidarity with the Ecuadorian victim, in which the demonstrators said they had confidence in the Spanish courts, and called on society to ensure such incidents did not happen again.

In Barcelona, the demonstration was in the Plaza Sant Jaume de Barcelona, and centred on the draft for a new ‘security protocol’ which the Government wants to introduce against all immigrants who are extradited from the country. The demonstrators consider the protocol endangers the lives of the people being deported, who generally had committed no crime, but simply failed the administrative requirement to have their papers in order.

Many of those taking part in the rallies called for the Spanish legislation against racist crimes to be toughened.
