Spanish men are now living two years longer than in 1995, when the last figures were published. Women are living three years longer
Life expectancy in Spain has crossed the 80 year barrier for the first time, according to the new data from the INE, National Statistics Institute.

It now stands at 80.23 years, with women living on average six years more than men.

Navarra, Madrid, La Rioja and Castilla y León are the regions of Spain where people live the longest, and the new numbers put Spain as one of the countries with the highest life expectancy in Europe.

In the case of women, only the French live longer, while in the case of men those in Sweden, Ireland, Holland, Italy and the U.K. live longer than the Spanish male.

The new life expectancy number is up more than two years on that published in 1995 for men, and up more than three years for women, and the new data shows that the chance of death across all younger age groups is now lower than before.
