The Junta President said he has informed the Prime Minister of his decision
The President of the Junta de Andalucía, Manuel Chaves, has confirmed that he has chosen 9th March 2008 as the date for the Andalucía regional election, and that he has informed the Prime Minister of his decision.
The other date under consideration was 2nd March, which would have been part of a long bank holiday, following the Día de Andalucía on 28th February, with concerns of a negative effect on turnout.
Speaking to Canal Sur Radio on Wednesday, Chaves was asked if the regional poll would coincide with the general election, which is also due to take place next March. He said he has no part in the matter and the decision was up to the Prime Minister.
Chaves said he hoped the campaign would be a positive one on all sides, without any insults.
The Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, said in an interview with Telecinco Television at the beginning of October that he was looking at the 2nd and 9th as possible dates for the national poll, while making it clear that he would not announce the date until parliament is dissolved.
The Andalucía poll has coincided with the general election on the past three occasions: in 1996, 2000 and 2004.
