The Partido Popular claim that new cracks have appeared in the Abdalajís tunnel after a test train travelling at 60km/hour went through
There are apparently more serious problems in the 7km long Abdalajís tunnel which has been constructed for the new AVE high speed train line which is due to start services in Málaga on December 23.
Accroding to the Partido Popular deputy Celia Villalobos, a test train travelling through the tunnel at 60kms/hour has resulted in cracks as wide as 70cm to 1m appearing, both on the floor and walls of the tunnel.
The local village of Abdalajís has complained for months that the tunnels’ construction has resulted in their village springs drying up, and it appears certain that the earth movements have indeed changed the local water table.
Villalobos showed journalists a video which clearly showed the problem after the test train had passed, and claimed that the Development Minister, Magdalena Álvarez, was lying nearly all the time.
Villalobos said she was sure however that when it opened the AVE would meet all safety requirements, but she also noted that a private security firm had been contracted to search the 50 or so workers on the tunnels, to make sure none of them took photos of the problem. ‘Just like a diamond mine’, she said.
