He is the first Spanish archbishop to ever sit on the accused bench
The Archbishop of Granada, Francisco Javier Martínez, took the stand on Wednesday in a case of slander and moral bullying brought against him by another priest, the former Archivist at Granada Cathedral, Francisco Javier Martínez Medina. He says in his complaint that he was dismissed as Archivist, and was suspended ‘ad divinis’ – in other words may no longer exercise as a priest.
The complainant said the Archbishop’s alleged accusation that he appropriated the copyright to a book on Granada Cathedral, sponsored by the CajaSur building society and commissioned by the previous Archbishop seriously damaged his professional career, and mentioned humiliating treatment which he said caused his health to suffer. Francisco Javier Martínez withdrew permission for the book’s publication.
The first Spanish archbishop to sit on the accused bench, Martínez appeared before the judge in charge of Criminal Court No. 5 in Granada, the former Malaya judge, Miguel Ángel Torres. Ideal newspaper says he denied any threats or pressure against the priest and, at times, refused to answer questions, saying they were related to internal matters of the Church.
The prelate was in the news on another matter earlier this year, when he refused to give in to demands from the people of Albuñol to withdraw his decision to transfer their much-loved village priest, Gabriel Castillo.
