This is one of five ski stations along the Cantabrian mountain range, and the only resort in Galicia.
The Manzaneda Ski and Mountain Resort is set in 2,000 hectares of forest on the region’s south eastern border with Castilla y León, in Pobra de Trives, Ourense province.
It is a year-round resort, with football and tennis, horse-riding, go karting, golf, mountain biking, hiking, a heated swimming pool and both indoor and outdoor sports complexes. There’s even an archery field and a rock climbing wall.
The ski station itself, with a minimum altitude of 1500 m and a maximum of 1800 m, is the most westerly in Europe and is equipped with 17 runs (4 green, 10 blue and 3 red), and 5 kilometres for cross-country skiing.
The total skiable area is 16.25 kms, with five snow cannons providing 600 metres of artificial snow. Manzaneda’s six ski lifts have the capacity to carry 7,600 people an hour.
The resort is host to the Galicia Alpine Ski Championships (with both youth and senior categories), the Galicia Badminton Championship, and a number of events at the Bike Park during the summer months, and also holds pre-season training camps for football, swimming and basketball.
Another event definitely worth a visit is held on the last Sunday of July, a traditional romería up to Manzaneda for the ‘Festa de la Bica,’ a type of cake typical to the area.
Then, on the first Sunday in August, is the Campeonato Nacional de Bandas de Gaitas (the National Gaita Championship) when thousands gather on the peaks of Manzaneda for the finals of the gaita league.
The 2007 edition saw 3,000 musicians from 87 bagpipe bands Galicia, Portugal and other parts of Spain taking part in this annual championship.
