The unit was established by the Head of the Guardia Civil and National Police, Joan Mesquida
Spain’s Guardia Civil Town Planning Crime Unit was established six months ago, and according to El País has already uncovered more than 100 cases of corruption across the country.
The unit has 80 cases still open while it has dealt with and completed a further 26. Over the six months 57 people have been arrested and 126 implicated in town planning irregularities, with fraud and perversion of the course of justice being the most common charges.
Andalucía is the region where the unit has acted the most, followed by the Baleares and Madrid.
The unit was established by the man who is now the head of both the Guardia Civil and the National Police, Joan Mesquida. It has the objective of stopping town planning crime, and carried out a series of inspections which allow it to uncover possible crimes. Around 200 people currently work in the unit.
