The new AVE high speed service opens to the public on December 23
The troubled Minister for Development, Magdalena Álvarez, was on board a Talgo train testing the new AVE high speed line into Málaga today, ahead of the service opening to the public on December 23.

She made the trip into the city from the new Santa Ana Station in Antequera and took advantage of the opportunity to announce new cheaper prices for the high speed service when it opens.

A single ticket from Málaga to Madrid will cost 76 € but will be available from just 30 € 40 cents if purchased more than two weeks ahead over the internet. That price is 51% cheaper than the current Talgo price.

There will also be a special price for business travellers with discounts of upto 40% for those who book a week in advance.

The cost of the journey to Antequera from Málaga will be just 10 € for the 25 minute journey.

The tariffs announced by the Minister still have to be approved by Spanish Railways RENFE.

Magdalena Álvarez underlined the complex nature of the link between Málaga and Antequera given that 60% of the 55 kms was made up of tunnels and viaducts, such as the 7km tunnel under the Sierra de Abdalajis.

The Málaga-Madrid AVE service will run at 300 kms/hour and will see 11 trains in each direction every day – practically one every hour. Journey time to the capital will be 2 hr 15 mins.

Knowing the Spanish habit of cutting corners on public works and pocketing the proceeds I don't think I shall be travelling on this train!
